Skin tightening covers treatments that aim to make loosening skin look firmer without surgery. At ZARA, 304 Edgware Road, the main options are HIFU, which focuses ultrasound energy beneath the skin, and PDO thread treatments, which place dissolvable threads under it. Microneedling can also play a part where the concern is crepey texture and fine lines rather than lift.

These treatments suit mild to moderate laxity: a jaw that has lost its crisp edge, a neck that looks a little crepey, a brow that sits slightly lower than it used to. The change they give is modest and builds gradually. If your skin has dropped significantly, or there is a lot of loose skin, surgery is the option that can make a real difference, and we will tell you so.

The HIFU price is set at consultation, since it varies with how many areas you have treated. PDO Full face is £600, Mono Thread is £250 and Microneedling (face) is £120, all per session. Every plan starts with a free consultation.

Why does skin lose its firmness?

Skin keeps its shape thanks to collagen and elastin, the proteins that give it strength and spring. From early adulthood the body makes a little less of them each year, and sun exposure, smoking and large changes in weight speed that loss up. Over time the deeper supporting layers soften too, and gravity does the rest.

The first signs tend to appear where skin is thin or moves a lot: along the jaw, under the chin, on the neck and around the eyes. Some people notice a crepey surface long before any real sagging, while others see the jaw outline blur first. Working out which of these you are dealing with is the first step towards choosing a treatment, and it is what we look at closely when you come in.

Which skin tightening treatment suits which concern?

Each option works at a different depth, so matching it to the concern matters more than picking the most intensive one.

  • HIFU directs ultrasound to small points in the deeper skin and the supportive SMAS layer, prompting collagen to contract and rebuild. There are no needles, and it can be planned for the full face, the lower face and jaw, the neck or the brow area.
  • PDO Full face uses lifting threads chosen to give subtle support to areas such as the cheeks, jowls or jawline, with some change visible sooner than with HIFU.
  • Mono Thread places smooth threads, usually in a mesh, to encourage collagen for fine lines and mild crepiness. It is not designed to lift.
  • Microneedling works nearer the surface on texture, fine lines and early loss of firmness, and can sit alongside HIFU in a longer plan.

If hollowing rather than looseness turns out to be the real issue, dermal filler may be discussed instead, and we will explain why.

How much change can you realistically expect?

Non-surgical tightening gives a softer, slightly firmer look rather than a dramatic lift. Friends are more likely to say you look well than to spot that something has been done. With HIFU, most of the change appears over two to three months as new collagen forms, and results often last around a year. Lifting threads may show some difference straight away, although swelling can make the face look tight or uneven for the first few weeks.

PDO threads dissolve over roughly six months, and their supporting effect can last from several months to around a year. Microneedling builds across a course, with sessions spaced weeks apart. In every case your skin keeps ageing, so maintenance is part of the conversation, and results differ from one person to the next.

When is surgery the better route?

Non-surgical treatments have a ceiling. Where there is heavy excess skin on the neck, deep folds along the jaw or tissue that has dropped well below the jawline, the improvement from HIFU or threads is often too small to justify the cost. In those cases a facelift or neck lift, carried out by a surgeon, is the treatment that can reposition tissue and remove loose skin.

We would rather say this at the start than sell you sessions that will disappoint. If your consultation suggests surgery would serve you better, we will explain our reasons plainly, and you are under no obligation to book anything with us.

Who should not have skin tightening, or should wait?

A medical history check comes before any treatment. HIFU is not suitable during pregnancy, with a pacemaker or other electronic implant, with metal implants in the area, with a history of keloid scarring, or where the skin is broken, infected or affected by severe acne. People with a very slim face need careful assessment, because deep heating can sometimes reduce fat and leave the face looking more hollow.

Threads are usually avoided in pregnancy and while breastfeeding, and may also be unsuitable if you are on blood thinners, have some autoimmune or bleeding conditions, form raised scars easily, or have recently had dental work or facial surgery. If you have had fillers or threads recently, tell us, as the timing of HIFU near them needs discussion. Threads are only offered to over-18s.

Your GP is the right first stop if you have a medical condition you are unsure about or a new lump or mole on the face or neck. If you feel unwell after HIFU or threads and cannot reach us, NHS 111 can give advice.

What is recovery like after each option?

HIFU usually involves little downtime. Redness tends to fade within hours, and mild swelling, tenderness or a tingling, numb feeling can last a few days. Most people go straight back to work. Rarely, the heat irritates a nerve, which can cause temporary numbness or weakness in part of the face that usually settles over weeks.

Threads ask more of you. Bruising, swelling and tightness are common for about a week, and you will be asked to avoid wide yawning and big expressions for around two weeks, sleep with your head raised for a few nights and skip facials and facial massage for several weeks. Microneedling leaves the skin flushed for one to three days, often followed by light flaking. We go through every side effect with you before you agree to treatment.

Non-surgical skin tightening: your questions answered

What is the difference between skin tightening and a lift?

Tightening treatments such as HIFU encourage firmer skin over time. Lifting threads physically support tissue and reposition it slightly. Both give modest changes compared with surgery, and some plans combine the two over a longer period.

Is skin tightening uncomfortable?

HIFU is felt as brief bursts of deep heat or a dull ache, stronger over bone. For threads, numbing is discussed and used where suitable, and you may feel pressure as they are positioned. We can pause at any point.

Can skin tightening help a crepey neck?

Mild looseness and crepey texture on the neck can be assessed for HIFU, and mono threads are aimed at fine crepey lines. Heavy loose skin on the neck usually calls for a surgical opinion instead.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people need one HIFU session, with a second sometimes considered several months later once the first can be judged. Threads are planned per session, and microneedling for texture is usually a course of three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart.

At what age should I think about skin tightening?

Age matters less than what your skin is doing. Threads are often a fit for people with mild to moderate laxity, commonly from the mid-thirties onwards. If there is little or no sagging, lifting treatments are unlikely to add much, and we will tell you that.

How much does skin tightening cost at ZARA?

HIFU is priced at consultation, as it depends on the areas treated. PDO Full face is £600, Mono Thread is £250 and Microneedling (face) is £120 per session. Your price is confirmed before you commit to anything.
