Lip fillers use a soft hyaluronic acid gel to add volume, improve symmetry or define the lip border. They suit adults who want fuller or more balanced lips with a temporary, adjustable result. At ZARA Aesthetic Medical Clinic on Edgware Road, London W2, our lip option is the 1ml Dermal filler at £150, and every treatment begins with a consultation and medical assessment.

For adults aged 18 and over only. UK law does not allow anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers for cosmetic purposes on anyone under 18, and we may ask for photo ID.

What lip fillers can and can't do

Lip filler is a soft gel placed in and around the lips. Depending on where it goes, it can add fullness, sharpen the outline, lift the corners slightly or even out one side that's thinner than the other.

What it can't do is give you someone else's lips. The amount your lips can hold, and the shape that will look right, depends on your natural anatomy, your teeth and the proportions of your face. Part of the consultation is working out a result that looks like it belongs to you.

The gel used for lips is softer than the gels used for cheek volume or the jawline, because lips need to move freely when you talk, eat and smile.

Common reasons people book lip fillers

Reasons vary a lot, and many people have more than one in mind.

  • Lips that have always felt thin in proportion to the rest of the face
  • A top and bottom lip that look uneven, or one side that's fuller than the other
  • A lip border or cupid's bow that has become less defined
  • Gradual loss of fullness with age
  • Fine vertical lines around the mouth, which may soften with careful placement

First time? Why we start conservatively

Lips can look quite different for the first few days, so a first treatment is a good time to be measured. Many people find 1ml gives a clear but natural difference, and some prefer even less to begin with. You can always add more at a later appointment once you've seen how your lips settle.

Bring a photo of your lips from a few years ago, or a picture of a look you like, if that helps explain what you want. We'll be honest about what suits your lips and what is realistic.

It's also worth thinking about how your lips look when you talk and smile, not only in a still photo. A shape that looks striking in a picture can feel less natural in conversation, so we check movement as well as the resting result.

When to wait before lip filler

Treatment is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or while you have a cold sore, spot or any infection on or near the lips. If you're prone to cold sores, tell us, as lip injections can sometimes trigger an outbreak and you may want to speak to your GP or pharmacist beforehand.

Let us know about medicines that affect bleeding, any autoimmune conditions and any previous filler. It's also wise to avoid booking in the fortnight before a wedding, photos or a holiday, as lips swell more than most areas.

Your lip filler appointment

Lip appointments are booked as 40 minutes, including your consultation.

  1. We discuss the shape and fullness you'd like and go through your medical history.
  2. We look at your lips at rest and when you smile and talk, then agree a plan.
  3. We explain possible side effects and aftercare, and you give your consent.
  4. The area is cleansed and the filler is placed in small amounts, with symmetry checked throughout.
  5. You check the result with a mirror and we talk you through the next few days.

Swelling, aftercare and how long lip fillers last

Lips swell more than other treated areas. Swelling is often most noticeable on the day after treatment and usually settles over one to two weeks, so judge the result once that time has passed. Bruising, tenderness and small firm areas are also common and tend to fade on their own.

For the first day, avoid lipstick or lip products, drinking through a straw, kissing and pressing on the lips. Skip intense exercise, saunas and alcohol for a day or two. Rare but serious complications, such as filler affecting a blood vessel, will be explained at consultation, and you should contact us straight away if you notice pale or dusky skin or worsening pain.

Because lips are always moving, lip filler typically lasts around six to twelve months. This varies from person to person, and many people choose a top-up when they notice their lips softening.

Lip fillers: your questions answered

How much are lip fillers at ZARA?

Our lip option is the 1ml Dermal filler at £150 per session. The final plan and price are confirmed at your consultation.

Will 1ml make my lips look too big?

For many people 1ml gives a noticeable but natural change, especially once swelling settles. We'll talk about the amount that suits your lips and you can choose to go more gently.

Why are my lips uneven the day after treatment?

Swelling is rarely even, and one side often swells more. Give it one to two weeks before judging symmetry, and contact us if you're concerned.

Can I have lip filler if I get cold sores?

Possibly, but not during an outbreak. Tell us at consultation, as injections can sometimes trigger a cold sore and you may want advice from your GP or pharmacist first.

How soon can I wear lipstick?

It's usually advised to avoid lipstick and lip products for around 24 hours to reduce the chance of infection at the injection points.

What happens when lip filler wears off?

Your lips gradually return towards how they looked before. Filler doesn't permanently stretch the lips when appropriate amounts are used.

Can I have lip filler before a special event?

Aim for at least two weeks beforehand so swelling and any bruising have time to settle.

Can lip filler fix uneven lips?

It can often improve the balance between the two sides or between the top and bottom lip. Perfect symmetry is rare in any face, so the aim is a closer match that still looks natural.
