Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical exfoliating treatment that mechanically removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells, then uses light suction to lift away the debris. People choose it for dullness, rough patches, mild congestion and an uneven-looking surface. At ZARA, 304 Edgware Road, London W2, Microdermabrasion (face) costs £70 per session and begins with a short consultation.
What microdermabrasion is
Your skin sheds dead cells all the time, but the process slows with age, sun exposure and dry indoor air. Those cells build up into a layer that makes the complexion look flat and can make skincare products sit on top rather than absorb.
Microdermabrasion speeds up that shedding. A handpiece with an abrasive surface, usually a diamond-coated tip or a fine stream of crystals, gently buffs the outer layer of the skin while a vacuum draws away the loosened cells. We will explain the method we use and why at your appointment.
It is one of the simplest clinical facials. It works only on the surface, so it suits people who want smoother, fresher-looking skin without the recovery that comes with deeper treatments.
Skin concerns microdermabrasion can help with
Microdermabrasion is a good fit when the problem is mostly on the surface. These are the concerns people most often bring to us:
- A dull, grey or tired-looking complexion
- Rough, dry patches that make foundation look uneven
- Mild congestion and blackheads
- Very fine surface lines
- Skin that feels thick or textured after a period of neglect, a long winter or a lot of travel
Who should not have microdermabrasion
Most people with healthy skin can have it, including many with oily or combination skin. Fragile, reactive skin and some conditions need a different approach. We will usually suggest waiting or choosing something gentler if you have:
- Active acne with inflamed spots, or a skin infection such as cold sores or impetigo
- Rosacea, broken capillaries or very sensitive, reactive skin
- Eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis on the face
- Recent isotretinoin use, or a recent peel, laser or waxing on the area
- Sunburn, open cuts or healing wounds
- Pregnancy, which we will talk through with you before deciding
What happens during your microdermabrasion appointment
Your appointment is booked as 40 minutes, including the consultation. Here is what to expect.
- We ask about your skin, skincare, medication and anything you have had done recently.
- The face is cleansed to remove oil and make-up.
- The handpiece is moved across the skin in slow, overlapping passes while the suction lifts away dead cells.
- We go over rougher areas such as the nose and chin with extra care and keep lighter pressure near the eyes.
- The skin is wiped clean and a calming moisturiser is applied.
- We finish with SPF and talk you through looking after your skin over the next few days.
Microdermabrasion results and how long they last
Skin usually feels noticeably smoother after one session and often looks brighter. Because only the very top layer is removed, the effect lasts until enough new dead cells build up again, which for many people is a few weeks.
For ongoing improvement in texture and tone, people commonly book a short course of around four to six sessions, two to four weeks apart, then move to occasional maintenance. Microdermabrasion will not change deep scarring or pigmentation, and we will say so if your goals need a different treatment. Results vary from person to person.
After your treatment: aftercare and side effects
A pink flush and a feeling of tightness are common and usually fade within a few hours. Some people have mild dryness or flaking for a day or two. Less commonly, sensitive skin can become irritated, slightly swollen or bruised, and we will discuss this before treating you.
Freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to sun, so apply SPF 30 or higher daily and avoid sunbeds. For a couple of days, skip retinoids, acids and scrubs, and hold off on waxing or threading near the treated area. A simple, fragrance-free moisturiser is all you need.
Microdermabrasion cost at ZARA London W2
Microdermabrasion (face) costs £70 per session, making it one of the most affordable clinical facials on our price list. As with every treatment, your final plan and price are confirmed at consultation.
If your skin also needs hydration, a HydroFacial at £80 combines exfoliation with hydrating solutions. For concerns that sit deeper, such as acne scarring, we may suggest a microneedling course instead. You can see how these compare on our facials overview.

Microdermabrasion: your questions answered
How is microdermabrasion different from a HydroFacial?
Microdermabrasion uses an abrasive tip or crystals with suction to buff away dead skin. A HydroFacial uses fluid-based exfoliation and adds extraction and hydrating solutions. Microdermabrasion is the more straightforward exfoliating option, and we can help you choose.
Can I have microdermabrasion in my lunch break?
Yes. Appointments are booked as 40 minutes and most people go straight back to work. You may look slightly flushed for a short while afterwards.
Does microdermabrasion help with dark spots?
It can make mild, surface-level unevenness look a little brighter by removing dead cells, but it does not reach deeper pigmentation. We will assess your skin and suggest a more suitable option if needed.
How often can I have microdermabrasion?
During a course, sessions are usually spaced two to four weeks apart so your skin can recover. Exfoliating too often can leave skin irritated, so we will guide you on spacing.
Is microdermabrasion suitable for men?
Yes. Many men book it for rough or congested skin. We will ask you to shave at least a day beforehand rather than on the morning of treatment, to avoid irritation.
Can I use my normal skincare afterwards?
Gentle cleansers and moisturisers are fine straight away. Leave out retinoids, acids, scrubs and strong active serums for about 48 hours, and wear SPF every day.
Will my skin peel after microdermabrasion?
Most people do not visibly peel. Some notice light dryness or a few flakes for a day or two, which a plain moisturiser usually settles.
