PRP hair treatment uses platelet-rich plasma, prepared from a small sample of your own blood, injected into areas of the scalp where hair is thinning. It may help support hair in some types of hair loss, and results vary from person to person. At ZARA Aesthetic Medical Clinic, 304 Edgware Road, London W2, PRP Hair is £150 per session.

For adults aged 18 and over only, and we may ask for photo ID.

What is PRP hair treatment?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. Platelets in your blood carry growth factors, proteins involved in the body's normal repair and renewal. For a PRP hair treatment, a small blood sample is taken, spun to concentrate the platelets in the plasma, and then injected into the scalp where hair has become thinner.

The thinking is that these growth factors may help support hair follicles that are still active but producing finer, weaker hair. PRP is not a hair transplant and does not create new follicles. It works best as part of realistic expectations set at consultation.

Can PRP help with hair loss and thinning hair?

Hair loss has many causes, so the honest answer is that it depends. PRP for hair loss is most often considered for gradual, pattern-type thinning in men and women, where follicles are still present. It is less likely to help where hair loss is caused by an underlying medical problem that has not been addressed.

Some people see thicker-looking hair or less shedding over a course of treatment, while others notice little change. PRP does not stop hair loss for good, and it cannot bring back hair in areas that have been bald for a long time. We would rather tell you that up front than have you pay for sessions that are unlikely to help.

  • Gradual thinning at the crown, temples or along the parting
  • A widening parting or more scalp showing through than before
  • Hair that feels finer and less dense than it used to
  • People who want to support their hair alongside advice from their GP or another specialist

When to see your GP first

Sudden hair loss, patchy bald spots, hair loss with an itchy, scaly or painful scalp, or shedding after illness, childbirth or a new medicine can all have causes that need medical attention. Thyroid problems and low iron are examples. If any of this sounds like you, we will suggest you speak to your GP before booking PRP.

PRP hair treatment may also not suit you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a blood or platelet disorder, take blood-thinning medicines, have an active scalp infection, or are having treatment for cancer. We will go through your history carefully at consultation.

What happens at your PRP hair appointment

Appointments at ZARA are booked as 40 minutes. Your first visit begins with a consultation and medical assessment, and you are under no obligation to go ahead.

  1. We ask about your hair history, family history, health, medicines and any tests you have had.
  2. Your scalp is examined, and photos may be taken with your permission to track progress.
  3. A small blood sample is drawn from your arm and spun in a centrifuge.
  4. The scalp is cleaned, and we discuss ways to keep you comfortable.
  5. The plasma is injected in small amounts across the thinning areas.
  6. We explain aftercare and agree when you should come back.

Courses, timelines and results

PRP for thinning hair is rarely a single session. A course of treatments is often recommended at consultation, usually spaced around a month apart, followed by maintenance sessions every few months if you are happy with how things are going.

Hair grows slowly, so any change takes time. Many people are advised to wait around three to six months before judging progress. Results vary from person to person and depend on the cause and stage of thinning, your health and how consistently you attend. Continued maintenance is usually needed to hold any improvement.

Aftercare and possible side effects

The scalp may feel tender, tight or slightly swollen for a day or two, and there can be some redness or pinpoint bleeding at injection sites. Headache, bruising at the blood draw site and, rarely, infection are also possible. We will discuss these with you before treatment and you can contact us with any concerns afterwards.

  • Wait until the next day before washing your hair, then use a mild shampoo
  • Avoid hair dye, chemical treatments and heat styling for a few days
  • Skip saunas, swimming and heavy exercise for 24 to 48 hours
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking for the first day if you can
  • Do not scratch or massage the scalp roughly while it settles

PRP hair treatment cost at ZARA

PRP Hair is £150 per session at ZARA. All prices are per session, and your final plan and price, including the number of sessions suggested, are confirmed at consultation. Because a course is often advised, it is worth asking us to set out the full picture before you start.

Some clients also book a PRP facial for the face or vitamin injections as part of their routine. We will only suggest extras if they make sense for you.

PRP hair treatment: your questions answered

Does PRP work for everyone with thinning hair?

No. PRP may help support hair in some people with gradual thinning, but results vary and some people see little benefit. Your consultation is the place to find out whether you are a reasonable candidate.

Is PRP hair treatment suitable for women?

Yes, women with thinning hair can be assessed for PRP. Hair loss in women can be linked to hormones, iron levels or thyroid health, so we may suggest checks with your GP first.

How many sessions of PRP for hair will I need?

It differs between people. A course is often recommended, followed by maintenance sessions, and your practitioner will explain their suggested plan and its cost at consultation.

Can I use other hair loss treatments at the same time?

Many people continue with treatments recommended by their GP or a specialist. Tell us about everything you use, and do not stop any prescribed treatment without speaking to the prescriber.

Will I need to shave my head?

No. The injections are placed through your existing hair, and most people can style their hair as normal by the next day.

Does the scalp injection hurt?

The scalp can be sensitive, and most people feel stinging or pressure with each injection. Comfort varies, and we will talk through options to help before we start.

Can I go back to work after PRP hair treatment?

Most people return to work the same day or the next. Your scalp may be a little tender, and you should avoid washing or styling products until the following day.

Is PRP hair treatment the same as a hair transplant?

No. A transplant is a surgical procedure that moves follicles from one part of the scalp to another. PRP uses injections of your own plasma and does not move or create follicles.
